Source of Samarium Fluoride SmF3

Since its invention in 1977, Samarium Fluoride SmF3 has been widely used in the field of synthetic chemistry. The reaction mediated by Samarium Fluoride SmF3 can be divided into Barbier type, free radical olefin/cyclization reaction type, furfuryl olefin, coupling reaction type, pinacol type, etc. Octahedral ring is a common framework structure in natural products, paclitaxel is the most famous one.
Fluorochrome provides a variety of methods for the synthesis of eight-membered rings, which will be discussed in this article. The reagent and its adduct and co-solvent tetrahydrofuran iodide solution are commercially available. In the presence of hexamethylenetriamine (HMPA), the reduction potential of Samarium Fluoride SmF3 is about 2.5 eV. Therefore, it is very sensitive to oxygen, easily oxidized to trivalent and deactivated.
